Brazilian Chamber Of Deputies

AGENDA:

Discussing national security and the present domestic situation in light of recent developments in the political landscape.

ABOUT COMMITTEE:

Welcome to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, 2022 at X-MUN 2024, this committee is in many ways a unique one. The delegates will be tackling the domestic political intricacies of the biggest country in South America while assuring that it stays, at the end of the three days, as one country is to surely prove a challenge. The issue that this committee faces is best described in two words, "ideological battle". Brazil has been plagued by a divide, an ideological divide, in the form of the rightist and leftist, conservative and liberal values. These divisions have only been furthered since a far-right President was elected in 2018. Now that his term draws to a close and with the conclusion of the General Elections a day ago, the ideological and political tensions have saturated as the entire country eagerly awaits the run-off elections on 30th October, a date that might just decide the future trajectory of Brazil and the continent. The delegates are faced with an issue, an issue of a large scale division of people on ideological grounds. Now, the resolution of this unavoidable issue, as well as the future of a promising state lies in the hands of you, the delegates of this committee.

CHAIRPERSONS' ADDRESS:

“Welcome to the death of the age of reason”
- Frank Underwood, House of Cards

Delegates,

This quote, although not meant for Brazil, almost perfectly represents the political landscape of it. Brazil, plagued by the threat of division since its inception, now stands at the brink of it. The enmity between the two sides of the political spectrum, the Left and the Right has led to Brazil becoming a boiling pot of tensions.

These tensions have reached a new high, since 2018, following the election of a far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, after more than three decades of leftist rule. Bolsonaro’s term was marked by high tensions, from stopping further demarcation of any indigenous land and promoting deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest to dismissing Covid-19 as a mere flu, these past few years have it all.

In light of the preceding years, the threat of a division has grown, and now with the 2nd October General Elections, radicalizing the political forces further, Brazil now stands a singular step from violent division. The future rests uneasy. It stands on you as law-makers of Brazil to decide whether it stands divided or united.

On a personal note, the executive board seeks, from the delegates, excellent paperwork, top-notch diplomacy and negotiations along with a thorough understanding of legal principles and personal policy, coupled with a readiness to logically and strategically change such policy. All this should ideally be accompanied with groundbreaking rhetoric and convincing oratory. This committee is meant to test your patience, resilience and willpower throughout the three days of the conference.

On behalf of my Executive Board, we wish to see the committee achieve either division or reconciliation.
